Huangshan 5 Day Itinerary

Hotel on the mountain, Huangshan, Anhui, China - 黄山,安徽,中国

Why this route

This five-day route holds together because it covers the two halves of the Huangshan area in a clean sequence: the mountain first, the villages and old street second. Days 1–3 never leave the mountain stops — a two-hour opening stop in Tangkou Town, then two consecutive days running Ciguang Pavilion, Yuping Scenic Area, the West Sea Grand Canyon and Beihai Scenic Area. Days 4–5 never return to them: three villages (Hongcun, Lucun, Tachuan Scenic Area) on Day 4 and a closing stop at Tunxi Old Street on Day 5. Each day therefore has one job, and no day mixes the two halves.

The day split earns its keep on the mountain. Giving it two consecutive days is what allows the West Sea Grand Canyon — the route’s only repeated stop — to be divided into a four-hour session on Day 2 and a three-hour session on Day 3, with a separate four-hour block left for Beihai Scenic Area. Around that core, Day 1 is a single two-hour stop in Tangkou Town, Day 4 bundles all three village stops into one day (three hours at Hongcun, two each at Lucun and Tachuan Scenic Area), and Day 5 closes with just two hours at Tunxi Old Street.

Day by day

Day 1 — Tangkou Town (2 hours). A single two-hour stop in Tangkou Town opens the route; nothing else is scheduled on this day.

Day 2 — Ciguang Pavilion, Yuping Scenic Area, West Sea Grand Canyon. The mountain sequence starts at Ciguang Pavilion, the one stop on the route with no listed duration. The rest of the day is two four-hour blocks: Yuping Scenic Area, then the West Sea Grand Canyon — eight timed hours before Ciguang Pavilion’s time is even counted.

Day 3 — West Sea Grand Canyon, Beihai Scenic Area. The route returns to the West Sea Grand Canyon for a second session, three hours this time, then finishes with four hours at Beihai Scenic Area.

Day 4 — Hongcun, Lucun, Tachuan Scenic Area. The plan moves to its village stops: three hours at Hongcun, then two hours at Lucun and two at Tachuan Scenic Area — three stops, seven timed hours.

Day 5 — Tunxi Old Street (2 hours). One two-hour stop at Tunxi Old Street closes the route.

Trade-offs

The cheapest cuts are the two-hour stops. On Day 4, Lucun and Tachuan Scenic Area each cost two hours next to Hongcun’s three, so dropping either one frees two hours and still leaves a two-village day. On the mountain, the West Sea Grand Canyon is the only stop scheduled twice — four hours on Day 2, three on Day 3 — which makes the Day 3 canyon session a self-contained block: cut it and Day 3 still keeps its four hours at Beihai Scenic Area.

The real flex point is Day 2, because Ciguang Pavilion is the only stop without a listed duration — decide its time on the ground rather than in advance. Anyone who needs a shorter trip should work from the back: Day 5 is a single two-hour stop at Tunxi Old Street and Day 4 sheds one two-hour village at a time, while the Day 2–3 mountain sequence is the part the route is built around.
