Huangshan 4 Day Itinerary

Mount Huangshan, Anhui, China

Why this route

This four-day loop pairs the two things the Huangshan area is built around: the summit scenery of Huangshan Scenic Area and the ancient villages of the surrounding countryside. Day 1 is a single, open-ended stop at Xixinan Ancient Village, a low-pressure on-ramp before the mountain. Days 2 and 3 then give Huangshan Scenic Area a full two-day pass: Day 2 runs the sequence of Yuping Scenic Area, Guest-Greeting Pine, Tianhai, Bright Summit and Paiyun Pavilion, while Day 3 covers the West Sea Grand Canyon, Beihai Scenic Area, Shixin Peak and Yungu Temple before ending at Hongcun. Day 4 closes the loop with Hongcun again, then Xidi, Tunxi Old Street and Liyang Water Street.

The day split does real work. Spreading the Scenic Area across two days keeps each mountain day to a handful of named stops with 1-3 hour windows rather than one compressed dash, and placing Hongcun at the end of Day 3 and the start of Day 4 makes the village the hinge between the mountain and the final day’s Xidi visit and old-street stops. Read as a whole, the route moves village, summit, canyon, village, town — one coherent arc from the region’s rural side to its peaks and back.

Day by day

Day 1 — Xixinan Ancient Village. The route opens with a single stop and no fixed duration attached, so the whole day flexes around it. It is the only stop before the mountain.

Day 2 — Huangshan Scenic Area. The day belongs to the mountain, worked in sequence: Yuping Scenic Area first (no fixed duration listed), then Guest-Greeting Pine (1-3 hours), Tianhai (1-3 hours), Bright Summit (1 hour) and Paiyun Pavilion (1-3 hours). Three of the four timed stops carry 1-3 hour windows, so the day can run long or short depending on pace.

Day 3 — Huangshan Scenic Area, then Hongcun. A second day inside the Scenic Area: West Sea Grand Canyon (1-3 hours), Beihai Scenic Area (3 hours — the longest single block on the route), Shixin Peak (1-3 hours) and Yungu Temple (1-3 hours). Hongcun, listed with no fixed duration, closes the day and opens the next one.

Day 4 — Hongcun, Xidi, Tunxi Old Street, Liyang Water Street. The morning belongs to Hongcun (no fixed duration), followed by Xidi, also open-ended. The day ends in town with two one-hour stops: Tunxi Old Street and Liyang Water Street.

Trade-offs

The mountain days carry the schedule’s flex. Nearly every timed stop on Days 2 and 3 is listed at 1-3 hours, so those windows are where the plan stretches or compresses; if energy runs low, pull Shixin Peak or Paiyun Pavilion down to the short end of their ranges rather than cutting Beihai Scenic Area, which carries the route’s longest fixed block at 3 hours. On Day 1, Xixinan Ancient Village is a standalone stop with nothing chained after it — if arrival runs late, it is the clean stop to drop, and the rest of the route is untouched.

With only three days available, cut Day 1 outright: Xixinan Ancient Village is the sole stop that day, so starting at Huangshan Scenic Area preserves the two-day mountain pass intact. On Day 4, Tunxi Old Street and Liyang Water Street are each budgeted at 1 hour; dropping Liyang Water Street frees an hour that can go to a longer Xidi visit. Anyone wanting a lighter final day can also treat Hongcun as a single visit — it appears at the end of Day 3 and the start of Day 4, so skipping the second pass moves you straight to Xidi in the morning.
