Why this route
This three-day route ties together Southwest China’s signature sights in one arc: a light opening day in Dujiangyan, then one flagship scenic reserve per day. Day 1 pairs two short stops — Dujiangyan Scenic Area and the Dujiangyan Panda Base, 1-2 hours each — while days 2 and 3 each belong to a single big name: Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area (3 hours) and Huanglong Scenic Area (2-3 hours). The through-line is simple: warm up small, then give each marquee landscape an uninterrupted day.
The day split does real work. Front-loading the two 1-2 hour Dujiangyan stops keeps the first day low-commitment and easy to shift if the start runs late. After that, Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong never share a day, so the route’s longest fixed block — the 3 hours at Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area — gets a full day of its own, and Huanglong’s 2-3 hours close the trip without competing for the same time.
Day by day
Day 1 — Dujiangyan. Two stops, both short. Start at Dujiangyan Scenic Area and give it 1-2 hours, then move on to the Dujiangyan Panda Base for another 1-2 hours. That is only 2-4 hours of stop time in total, which is what makes this the flexible day of the trip.
Day 2 — Jiuzhaigou. The centrepiece. The whole day is built around Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area, with 3 hours budgeted on site — the longest single block in the itinerary and the stop the route is named for.
Day 3 — Huanglong. The closer is Huanglong Scenic Area, planned for 2-3 hours. With one stop and no second commitment, the day bends around however long you spend there.
Trade-offs
Day 1 is where to cut. If time tightens, drop either the Dujiangyan Panda Base or Dujiangyan Scenic Area — the day works fine as a single 1-2 hour stop, and nothing later in the plan depends on it. Day 2, by contrast, is the block to protect: Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area’s 3 hours is the longest fixed commitment in the route. The other flex point is day 3 — Huanglong Scenic Area’s 2-3 hour window means you can plan for the 2-hour end if the schedule slips.
Anyone working with only two days should simplify to the two reserve days: keep the Jiuzhaigou day and the Huanglong day and cut day 1 entirely. Conversely, if you would rather not cut anything, the plan already stays light — no day carries more than two stops, and only day 1 carries two.
