Why this route
The route holds together because it crosses three distinct landscape registers in one line. It starts in the lake-and-grassland country around Qinghai Lake — Riyue Mountain, the Zanpu Linka Scenic Area, Danga’er Ancient City, the lake’s west-shore road, Gangca Grassland — moves through the salt-lake and yardang desert country (Chaka, Gahai, Qarhan, Dachaidan Emerald Lake, the Wusute water yardangs, Lenghu Mars Camp, Eboliang), arrives at Dunhuang for Yangguan, the Mogao Grottoes and the Mingsha Mountain dunes, then returns through Jiayuguan Pass, the Zhangye Danxia, Mati Temple and the Qilian Mountain grasslands. Dunhuang is the hinge: the first half works across lake basin and desert toward the oasis, the second half unwinds through the corridor and the mountains, so each stretch adds new scenery.
The day split gives each register room. Days 1–3 chain three, two and two stops around the lake country, with stops slotted at one to three hours (three for Danga’er Ancient City). Days 4–7 cross the desert: a three-stop day at the Haizi Poetry Exhibition Hall, the Keluke Lake–Tuosu Lake Nature Reserve and Qarhan Salt Lake; an open-ended day at Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve; a Dachaidan Emerald Lake and Wusute Water Yardang Geopark day (3–4 hours there); and a Lenghu Mars Camp and Eboliang day (3 hours there). Day 8 arrives at Yangguan, Day 9 gives Dunhuang’s two headline sites three hours each, and Days 10–12 close with Jiayuguan Pass, Zhangye Colorful Danxia, a four-hour stop at Mati Temple and the Qilian Mountain trio of Zhuoer Mountain, Gangshika Snow Peak and the Menyuan Rapeseed Flower Sea.
Day by day
Day 1 opens with three stops: Riyue Mountain (1–3 hours), Zanpu Linka Scenic Area (1–3 hours) and Danga’er Ancient City (3 hours).
Day 2 follows the water: 1–3 hours on Qinghai Lake’s west-shore road, then 1–3 hours across Gangca Grassland.
Day 3 is the first salt day, pairing Chaka Salt Lake (1–3 hours) with Gahai Salt Lake (1–3 hours).
Day 4 mixes three stops: the Haizi Poetry Exhibition Hall (1–2 hours), the Keluke Lake–Tuosu Lake Nature Reserve (1–3 hours) and Qarhan Salt Lake (1–2 hours).
Day 5 is given over to a single stop, Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve, with no fixed duration listed — the day flexes around it.
Day 6 pairs Dachaidan Emerald Lake (1–2 hours) with the Wusute Water Yardang Geopark (3–4 hours).
Day 7 stays in yardang country: Lenghu Mars Camp (1–2 hours) and Eboliang (3 hours).
Day 8 is a single-stop day at Yangguan Scenic Area (1–3 hours), the first of the route’s Dunhuang sights.
Day 9 is Dunhuang’s core day: three hours at the Mogao Grottoes and three hours at the Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring Scenic Area.
Day 10 continues to Jiayuguan Pass (1–2 hours) and the Zhangye Colorful Danxia Scenic Area (1–3 hours).
Day 11 heads into the mountains: four hours at Mati Temple, then 1–3 hours in the Qilian Mountain grassland.
Day 12 closes with three stops: Zhuoer Mountain (1.5 hours), Gangshika Snow Peak Scenic Area (1–3 hours) and the Menyuan Rapeseed Flower Sea (1–3 hours).
Trade-offs
Where the schedule flexes: Day 2 lists only two stops at 1–3 hours each and Day 8 a single 1–3-hour stop at Yangguan, so either can absorb a slow morning or an extended stop without touching anything else. Where a cut is needed, Day 4 stacks three stops — dropping Qarhan Salt Lake (1–2 hours) leaves the Haizi Poetry Exhibition Hall and the Keluke Lake–Tuosu Lake Nature Reserve intact — and Day 12 stacks three as well; if timing slips there, cut Gangshika Snow Peak (1–3 hours) and keep the 1.5-hour Zhuoer Mountain with the Menyuan Rapeseed Flower Sea.
Who should simplify: anyone short of the full 12 days should drop Day 5 first — it is a single open-ended stop at Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve, and removing it lets the plan run from the Qarhan Salt Lake day straight to Dachaidan Emerald Lake. Travellers who want only the headline sights should protect Days 8 and 9 — Yangguan, the Mogao Grottoes and Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring are what the route builds toward — and take their trims from the Day 1–3 lake stops or the Day 10–12 corridor and mountain stops instead.
